| Trådløs subwoofer
Det amerikanske firma Polk Audio lancerer 'home theater' løsning med trådløs subwoofer, der er baseret på teknologi fra Nordic Semiconductor (in english).
| Ultra low power (ULP) 2.4GHz RF specialist, Nordic Semiconductor, has announced that leading US speaker manufacturer, Polk Audio has specified its nRF24Z1 2.4GHz transceiver to provide the audio link to a wireless subwoofer in its latest SurroundBar SDA Instant Home Theater (IHT) cinema system.
The SurroundBar SDA is a lifestyle product designed to provide a full surround sound home cinema experience with the minimum of speakers and domestic clutter. It achieves this using a single speaker bar which in the IHT product variant can be sonically augmented in the lowest audio frequencies by a wireless subwoofer.
This can be placed anywhere in a room without having to wire it up to the main SurroundBar unit. All that’s required is a stereo RCA input from a TV, DVD player or other source to the SurroundBar SDA, plus an AC outlet for the subwoofer’s power cord. This means a successful home cinema setup can usually be achieved within minutes with no unsightly speaker cables.
SDA stands for a Polk Audio patented ‘Stereo Dimensional Array’ technology that creates a three-dimensional sound field that can be precisely steered and projected around a room using a few closely spaced speaker drive units (center, left/right, and left/right surround) located directly in the front of the listener within the SurroundBar SDA itself.
In operation, the wireless subwoofer receives a wireless audio signal using a pair of nRF24Z1 transceivers – one in the SurroundBar SDA and one in the subwoofer. Because the Nordic Semiconductor nRF24Z1 offers a substantial 4Mbit/s bandwidth, CD-quality uncompressed audio transmission can be maintained even if packets have to be resent due to interference. In contrast, competing 2.4GHz solutions for wireless audio lack enough bandwidth to deliver such high-quality audio and must resort to data compression techniques that degrade sound quality.
The nRF24Z1 also utilizes a proprietary frequency agility protocol to provide robust wireless streaming even in the presence of other 2.4GHz transmission sources – such as Bluetooth wireless technology and Wi-Fi – that may be operating in the vicinity. The frequency agility protocol ensures the nRF24Z1 changes to a different communication channel before interference becomes so severe that too many packets are being lost for audio quality to remain unaffected.
- Polk Audio comes from a tradition of having wired speakers, says Tim Richardson, Contracts Manager at Polk Audio.
- But to stay true to our minimalist approach as well as wider consumer trends towards wireless generally, we realized that people are very receptive to not having wires anymore and that will increasingly include wireless audio. As such, this product represents the first of what will be many future ventures for us into the wireless audio domain.
Polk Audio, however, with a reputation for delivering high quality, high value audio products did not take its leap into the wireless audio domain lightly.
- We did have concerns: primarily that we would have to sacrifice proven wired audio quality for wireless convenience, which was something we didn’t feel at all comfortable doing. To us the wireless audio link had to sound as good as a wired link for us to feel comfortable specifying it into one of our products.
- Wireless audio is a fast-growing segment of the wireless market and a technology that increasing numbers of traditionally wired audio products will now start to employ, comments Geir Langeland, Director of Sales & Marketing at Nordic Semiconductor.
- As long as the wireless audio link provides no noticeable degradation in sound quality and will work reliably in a wide range of operating environments, many consumers will opt for the convenience of being able to locate speakers within a room without having to worry about accommodating long lengths of trailing speaker cables. Most people want uncluttered living rooms including audio products that work well without having to see how they are connected together. And Polk Audio’s use of a wireless subwoofer to augment a single-speaker surround speaker system without loss of wired audio quality is an excellent example of this.
About the nRF24Z1
The nRF24Z1 is a unique single chip solution for wireless streaming of crystal clear CD-quality stereo audio up to16-bit, 48 kHz without using compression. The nRF24Z1 also features input support of up to 24-bit, 96 kHz.
Operating in the global 2.4 GHz band the nRF24Z1 offers unrivalled performance and integration coupled with an ultra-low solution cost. The nRF24Z1 uses Nordic Semiconductor’s 4 Mbit/s MegaZtream platform embedding a state of the art Quality of Service (QoS) subsystem with an ultra low power robust 4 Mbit/s wireless 2.4 GHz transceiver and all appropriate digital audio interfaces creating a complete digital wireless audio streamer solution in a 6 by 6 mm package. In addition to streaming audio up to 4 Mbit/s, the nRF24Z1 also boasts a digital control information channel for transfer of control information such as volume, balance and display details.
Using industry standard I2S and S/PDIF interfaces for audio, the nRF24Z1 can interface without glue logic to virtually any digital audio source, or external industry standard low cost analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue converters for analogue audio input and output. Control information uses SPI or 2-wire (I2C compatible).
The nRF24Z1 features a well-balanced design where attention is paid to every detail of the audio interface and the challenging tasks of streaming CD-quality audio with no glitches and degradation in performance in the presence of other 2.4 GHz sources such as Bluetooth. The circuit has embedded voltage regulators, giving maximum noise immunity and operation from a single 2.0 to 3.6 V supply. |
